BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum Helped our Family Succeed in Homeschooling.

BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum helped our family succeed in homeschooling when I was desperate! Someone asked me, "Why do you use Bob Jones Homeschool Curriculum"?

In 2006, my oldest daughter was every ill and ended up with a total colectomy. After a three month stay in the hospital and many complications, I knew she could not handle going back to the Christian School. I also knew that although I loved the school they were attending, I could not continue to send my other children to the Christian school and homeschool my daughter at the same time.

However, I had 7 children: 2 babies and 5 school age, 6th grade to kindergarten. I had no idea how I was going to homeschool, continue to be a mom, and carry the responsibilities of a Pastor’s wife at the same time.

When I was introduced to BJU Press Distance learning, it probably saved my life, and definitely preserved my sanity! :)

Why I Use BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum

Biblical World View

I wanted a curriculum that was Gospel centered. My desire is that my children not only get a quality education, but that they know JESUS--for salvation from their sin, but also how to live their everyday lives through the power of the Gospel...the power to live a victorious Christian life because of the Resurrection!

Therefore most important reason I chose BJU Press was the emphasis on a Christian worldview. I wanted my children to  learn through the lens of the Bible and how it relates to the world.

BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum provides that lens in all of their textbooks by examining science, the arts, government, math, and history. The curriculum taught the biblical story-line of Creation, the Fall, and Redemption.

Bryan Smith from his article Biblical Integration: Pitfalls and Promise says it best, “The work of Christian education is the work of redeeming what has fallen. We study all aspects of human culture because we see in that study the potential for redemption. As we view the academics through the lens of Scripture, we learn how we may be used to redeem those disciplines back to God.”

My passion is that all 10 of my children see how they can be used by God to serve Him with their WHOLE life. BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum has been a tool to help integrate that philosophy into each of my children’s hearts.

BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum

 Complete K3-12 Curriculum

My first year of homeschooling included grades 6th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and Kindergarten. The thought of homeschooling that many grades made me want to sit down and cry. Of course, that did not include the other two little ones who were 2 and 3 as well as the other little miracle that the Lord was to give us the following fall. So it was very important to me that I received a complete curriculum set that was going to include all of the materials I would need: Teacher’s editions, lesson plans, teaching tips, and activity ideas. Again, BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum provided all that for me and so much more...

 Distance Learning Video lessons

I chose the distance learning option.

BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum were engaging to all my grade levels. The classes are recorded in studios with the teachers speaking directly to the homeschooled child and not to a classroom of students.

For example, with the K-5 curriculum, the puppets Hopscotch, Hopper, and Dotty along with Mrs Lawson and Mrs. Walker taught my children to not only love to read, but to think about what they were reading--we call it critical thinking.

They were encouraged even in Kindergarten to write in a memory book, which taught them how to put their thoughts on paper. This emphasis on critical thinking continues all the way up to 12th grade.

I love that it has fit to many of my children's different learning styles and it has all the lesson plans already done for you.

I have now graduated 4 children and still have 6 left at home. We still are thrilled with how well our children are doing academically.

All the homeschool video lessons and Parent led are available as a complete grade package or as individual subjects for Grades K5–12. K4 is available only as complete grade package.

There are two options for Distance Learning video lessons: DVDs or Online streaming I would have loved to use the internet option because it grades test and quizzes for you (how awesome is that?)  My internet is terrible so we have always used the DVDs.

DVD

When we first began homeschooling, my children watched their classes using a DVD or a portable DVD player. We made sure everyone had their own earphones or we would have been in real trouble with the noise! Now they each have their own computer. Using the DVD option made it convenient and portable so I could set up my own homeschool schedule.

Several of my children were ahead in math or reading, so I was thrilled when I had the option to move up or down one or two grade levels.

When I ordered 6 BJU Press Distance Learning homeschool kits, I received all the materials I needed... Textbooks, handouts, Teacher Editions, and organized Video lesson guides. Although you can only lease the DVDs for 13 months the textbooks were mine. Over the years, I have re-sold my used books to help pay for the next years school supplies.

Online Streaming

With this option, you still receive all the materials needed... Textbooks and handouts. Access to the classes last for 18months, which is normally from July 1st to the end of the following December.

One of the reasons I wish we could use the Online option is because Lessons, eTextbooks, and assignments can be accessed virtually from any device, including iPad, Android, PC, and Mac.

The second reason is that although normally grading, organizing lesson plans, and keeping track of student records can be a time-consuming process, if I used the DLO my quizzes and tests could be taken online and graded instantly!

That definitely does not always happen in my home.

The end result is that grade books and records are on the web, you can see them anytime and print out transcripts.

 Affordable

Over the years I have always waited to purchase my homeschool books when BJU Press had a sale. If you purchase through a HomeWorks Consultant, you will always get free shipping and 10% off. They are also up to date on all the great specials for the books and distance learning prices.

Flexible for every family and all learning styles

We have used the Distance Learning because it has worked best for our family. However, many children benefit from being Parent taught or working independently with the books. Because of the way the books are written, BJU Press is easy to adapt to each individual child’s learning styles.

BJU Press Homeschool Curriculum has helped our family be able to homeschool successfully. What do you think about BJU Press?
